Godzilla: Resurgence is Japan’s answer to the 2014 Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla, and the first Godzilla from series creator Toho Studios since 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.
Directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (2015’s Attach on Titan), Godzilla: Resurgence will use “hybrid” special effects that include using computer graphics as well as miniature sets. Higuchi has previously stated that this film will not have the same feel as earlier, happier installments in the series, saying that the world has lost its innocence after so many terrorist attacks and natural disasters in recent years.
While the U.S. will get a sequel to Garth Edwards’ Godzilla in 2018, Godzilla: Resurgence will open on July 29, 2016 in Japan. Currently there has been no U.S. date announced for Toho’s film.
